Dear Ms Quatro

Re: Can The Can

I am afraid I require enlightenment, Ms Quatro, as I am utterly perplexed by the above “song title”. Indeed, your intended meaning remains elusive, even after considerable discussion with my wife Olive. One can only speculate, in the following ways:

Perhaps you are advocating placing one “can” inside another, rather like sub-standard plastic “carrier bags”, for the secure handling of provisions. However, such advice surely overstates the likelihood of an accident involving, for example, soup.

Alternatively, this is an unfinished enquiry. For example, “can the can preserve many foodstuffs effectively?” would be answered in the affirmative, while “can the can be considered a viable alternative to a mobile telephone?” would surely require a negative response. Sadly, the listener is left frustrated.

Olive and I agree that the most plausible explanation is that the song addresses the necessity of “recycling”; placing the “can” into the correct “trash-can” is indeed to be encouraged. This use of the American term for “wheelie bin” is, I believe, consistent with your background in Devil Gate Drive, Detroit. I can certainly assure you that Olive and I already follow your advice, of course after rinsing and sorting thoroughly.

I look forward to a speedy resolution to this matter.

I would like to add that I am a great admirer of your work Ms Quatro, and believe that the rather “rocky” sound of your backing group complements your own voice and persona perfectly. Well done.

Yours

Wilf Turnbull

CAN THE CAN

A STRANGE TITLE WITH EVEN STRANGER LYRICS. I DID NOT WRITE THIS . IT WAS WRITTEN ESPECIALLY FOR ME BY MIKE CHAPMAN AND NICKY CHINN AFTER THEY HEARD MY BAND, DOING ALL MY OWN COMPOSITIONS.

MY INTERPRETATION IS THAT IS MEANS AS WE AMERICANS SAY.. 'CAN IT'... IN OTHER WORDS, KEEP IT SAFE .. KEEP IT FOR YOURSELF .. UNTIL YOU NEED IT.

MIKE ALWAYS SAYS HE WILL ONE DAY TELL ME WHAT IT 'REALLY' MEANS.. BUT UNTIL HE DOES, MY EXPLANATION WILL DO.

KIND REGARDS
